Accreditation:

The fact of being officially verified, recognised, accepted or approved of by an official body and or through peer review. 

 

Accredited Archaeologist 

An accredited archaeologists is someone who holds the designation Practitioner (PCIfA), Associate (ACIfA) and Member (MCIfA) from the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. CIfA accreditation demonstrates professionalism in archaeology. Using an accredited archaeologist assures clients that the work will meet their needs and is carried out in the public interest. 

 

Accredited Conservator-Restorer

An Accredited Conservator-Restorer (or ACR) is someone who demonstrates to clients, employers and peers an in-depth knowledge of conservation, a high-degree of competence, sound judgement and a deep understanding of the principles which underpin their practice, by showing that they are proficient across Icon’s professional standards in conservation. 

 

Archaeology

Archaeology is the study of the past through the physical evidence of how people built and made things, and how they lived in and changed their environment.

 

Architectural Technology

Architectural Technology is a creative and innovative design discipline which integrates architecture, science, technology and engineering. It forms the link between concept, innovation and realisation of a building or structure. At its heart are the technology, buildability, functionality and performance of the design, taking into consideration materials, innovative processes, production techniques and sustainability. All this complies with regulatory, statutory and legal requirements.

 

Chartered Architectural Technologist 

A Chartered Architectural Technologist is someone who holds the designation MCIAT or FCIAT from the Chartered Institute for Architectural Technologists and who is qualified to lead the technological design of a project and manage projects from inception to completion. 

 

CIAT Chartered Practice 

Chartered Architectural Technologists who offer services directly to clients have a mandatory obligation to register as a CIAT Chartered Practice. The practice must include at least one Principal (defined as a sole practitioner, a director, a partner or a limited liability member of a practice) who is a Chartered Architectural Technologist with control over the activities of the practice.

The CIAT Conservation Accreditation Register identifies Chartered Architectural Technologists competent in the conservation of historical buildings/assets and their surroundings.

 

CIfA Registered Organisation Scheme

The CIfA Registered Organisation scheme is a unique quality assurance scheme to ensure that organisations carry out their historic environment work in accordance with the Code of conduct of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists with a commitment to quality and integrity in archaeological matters. 

 

CIOB Building Conservation Certification Scheme

The CIOB Building Conservation Certification Scheme identifies builders and construction managers who can demonstrate their competence against CIOB’s Building Conservation Competencies and sustainability and energy efficiency issues. The scheme offers three levels of competence – registered, proficient and certified. 

 

Code of professional ethics

A set of rules for ethical behaviour that a professional must follow.

 

Competence

The ability to do something. We talk about technical and ethical competence as the two components of professional competence.

 

 

 

Conservation 

The process of maintaining and managing change to a historic/heritage asset or object in a way that sustains and where appropriate enhances its significance. 

 

Conservationist 

A person who advocates or promotes conservation. 

 

Conservator              

A person who cares for, maintains and enhances a historic/heritage asset or object.

Construction project management is the development, conservation and improvement of the built environment through clients, organisations and individuals working together to meet the changing needs of society. 

 

Continuing Professional Development

CPD is the collective set of learning experiences which help develop and improve someone’s professional practice

Ethics are the application of moral principles and values.

 

Heritage scientist

Heritage science is the interdisciplinary scientific study of cultural and natural heritage  to improve understanding, management and engagement. 

 

Historic environment:

All aspects of the environment resulting from the interaction between people and places through time, including all surviving physical remains of past human activity, whether immoveable or moveable, visible, buried or submerged.

 

Icon – the Institute of Conservation 

Icon plays a key role in championing the care of cultural heritage and supporting the conservation profession. Icon raises awareness of the cultural, social and economic value of caring for heritage and champions high standards of conservation.

 

Register 

An official list or record of names or items.

 

Registered competent specialist historic environment professional

An individual or business that is officially recognised, accepted or approved of by a professional body as most appropriate for the investigation, care or conservation of historic/heritage assets or objects. 

 

Restorer

A person who repairs or renovates an historic/heritage asset or object to return it to its original condition. 

Restoration

The act of repairing or renovating an historic/heritage asset or object to return it to its original condition. 

 

Specialist historic environment professional

A person who is recognised by their professional bodies as highly-skilled specialists in the study and care of our historic environment and who is therefore included in a relevant register.
